First references to organised Association Football in Wickwar (Gloucestershire) are in the early 1890s. There have been teams in this small "town" ever since with some decades bringing more honors than others. Early on in the 1900s, the team was called Wickwar Athletic. But fashions change and so did the name, Wickwar Athletic became Wickwar Rovers then Wickwar United until 1990 when it became Wickwar Wanderers. With a number of breweries in Wickwar, it is not surprising that Wickwar teams were locally referred to as "The Brewers" in the first decades of the century.
The Club has Senior and Youth sections. Senior teams play on Saturdays in the Stroud and District League (Divisions 3 and 7) and, until the end of season 2001, on Sundays in the Senior (top) division of the Bristol & Wessex Sunday League. Youth teams play in the Stroud Youth League and the mid-Glos mini-league.
The annual Football Frolics is a successful event run every year. A five-a-side football tournament held in June. Forty to fifty teams enter, from 6-7 year olds to the over fifties. Girls' and womens' teams are represented. For more details about the "frolics" click here.
Another successful event is the Comedy Night, we have had great feedback from our attendees, we usually have three comedians and a compere. There is a licensed bar with many beers and wines. For more information click here.
