World Cup 2006

The 2006 world cup has captivated the hearts and minds of the entire nation and in the sleepy footballing empire of Wickwar it is the exact same story. Mr Samual Honeyborne (1 st team manager) was kind enough to organise a bbq and a boat load of rough cider for an 11am start on the morning of the Paraguay game. The club as a whole tend to enjoy a beverage or two so the initial contact place was decended upon by players and “friends of the club” in their masses. Several pints of cider (for the hardcore) or lager later there was the walk to the legendary Wickwar Social Club where the Blackthorn was ready and waiting at approx 12-30 just 90 minutes before kick off. Talisman midfielder Dave Foggy Ecclestone was in charge of the Juke box and managed a fabulous mix of 3 lions and Vindaloo for the entire build up.

As the volume of singing raised the standard dipped and the alcohol consumtion went through the roof – we neared kick off time. Gill Hopkins (the social club hostess with without a doubt the mostess) was starting to become overrun as the numbers built in the club as did the atmosphere.

A host of Wickwar legends started to arrive starting with two guys who (unfairly) tend to be effectionately know as the idiot brothers. Dave and John Windle were at their supping best ably supported by their mate who’s name I can’t remember (rough cider early doors).

There was Terry Skuse

The guy on the left is the one who’s name I can’t remember – sorry mate. On the right is the delectable Mrs Frank Sneddon. Tidy despite being Welsh!!

Shopkeeper of the year – Ralph Sainsbury was there – never played a game of football in his life but you can’t be that old without being classed as a legend.

So on with the game – the beer was still flowing and some people were starting to show the stress of the situation.

Talisman midfielder Foggy Ecclestone looking (enthusiastic?) and Rob (tax dodging, haircut dodging, buying a pint dodging student) Lamplugh.

There was decent number of Thomas “family” over!!

The reserve team boss & Mark Stow (a teacher) were stuggling through the pain barrier.

The first team boss had turned to his good lady to try to keep with the plot – having said that he had already fallen asleep during the second half!!

So, we won the game and everyone went home happy – with the exception of a fe who decided to stay out. Now Mr Ecclestone has been described on many occasions as out talisman midfielder. This doesn’t apply to his drinking abiltity. Dave is a keen tryer but drinking is not his forte!! Having been caught putting lemonade in his cider earlier in the day foggy had a few problems with life later on.

This photo was taken in the garden on the Buthay – see we do move away from the social club occasionally!!

All in all – what a tremendous day – one big group of fine people, drinking and watching the boys – roll on Trinidad & Tobago.

Below are a few more snaps of the day!

James Rossiter – in his natural habitat!!

James Smith & family – one is his mum & the other his girlfriend – guess which way around??
