About Us

First references to organised association football in Wickwar date back to the early 1890s.

There have been teams in this small “town” ever since with some decades bringing more honours than others. Early on in the 1900s, the team was called Wickwar Athletic, but fashions change and so did the name. Wickwar Athletic became Wickwar Rovers then Wickwar United, until 1990 when it became Wickwar Wanderers. With a number of breweries in Wickwar, it is not surprising that Wickwar teams were locally referred to as “The Brewers” in the first decades of the century.

The Club has Senior and Youth sections.

Seniors

The Senior Team play in Stroud League Division 4. Until 2001 the club also played on Sundays in the Senior (top) division of the Bristol & Wessex Sunday League.

The club reached Stroud Division 3 after winning Division 4 back in 2011, but unfortunately at the time a number of players left and the club was forced to fold the senior side. The first team became the reserve team. After a couple of years, a number of senior team players returned under a new regime and the club have been on an upward trajectory since then.

The Seniors have achieved successive promotions (winning Division 5 in 2015) and managed to reach the final of the county cup (competing against over 60 other Gloucestershire sides including many playing at a higher level).

There is a real ethos at Wickwar Wanderers for developing young players, and bringing through our players in the youth section. The current senior squad is predominantly made up of players who have been with Wickwar since their youth team days and with a youth team in every age group this continues to be the case. The future is bright.

That said, we have a squad ranging in age from 16 upwards and are always on the lookout for new players. For more information on how to join, please contact us.

The team trains midweek Wednesday evenings, and games are on a Saturday afternoon.

Juniors

An F.A Standard Chartered Club, we have teams representing virtually every age group, from our infant skills group right through to our under 18’s side.

In the 2015/2016 season the youth section won several league titles and a number of cup competitions. We create an environment in which the youngsters are able to enjoy their football and compete at a competitive standard. This is represented by our continued success across the age groups.

The current senior squad was represented by 5 players from the under 18’s team last year and the current senior team manager played in the youth team way back when. Development through the set-up is heavily encouraged.

Every age group would gladly welcome interest from new players and anybody interested in discussing joining a team is strongly recommended to get in touch to discuss potential opportunities.

Veterans

We also have a long running veteran’s team. The vets play in the Bristol league and the standard is very competitive and taken seriously, each match is supplied with a referee and two linesmen and played on some lovely playing surfaces.

Anybody over 35 is eligible to play, and should you be interested in participating with our veteran’s team please contact Dean May.

Football Frolics

Wickwar Wanderers are arguably most famous locally for our annual Football Frolics competition. This is a five-a-side football tournament held annually in June. Forty to fifty teams enter and ages range from 6 year olds right through to the fiercely competed veterans tournament. Girls’ and womens’ teams are also represented. The tournament has now been running for over 25 years and is a staple of the local summer football schedule.

Comedy Night

Another very successful event is the Wickwar Wanderers Comedy Night. The event is held in the village annually, with a rostrum of professional comedians booked through legendary comedy agency Jongleurs. The event regularly attracts large crowds and provides a great occasion for the local community; with beer provided by local brewers it provides a fun evening for all. Anybody wishing to attend is recommended to get in touch to book tickets early, the event regularly sells out!
