Date: 20th August 2016
Half Time 1:0
Having been promoted last season Wickwar got their season underway with a difficult away game at a much improved Taveners side. In true August fashion the side was hit by injuries, holidays and a hangover from the cricket season with 8 players missing, but a competitive side took the field none-the-less.
The game was very even with both sides having a number of chances. Max Minter and Ben Stiles both came close with efforts, and at the other end a last ditch tackle from Rob Banister prevented a certain goalscoring opportunity. Both teams worked very hard, but ultimately the home-side took the lead on the stroke of half-time. After some patient build-up play a central midfielder hit a powerful shot which cannoned against the cross-bar, and with some fortune fell at the feet of the advancing striker who slotted home from 10 yards.
Second half was much the same with both teams creating chances. Around the 65th minute Taveners doubled their lead after a longball was misread and added a third around the 80th minute. Legs started to tire and the fitness advantage and sharpness of the home team started to show, but it was a close game and something to build on going into the rest of the season.
