New Skills Group Launched!

If your children have been inspired by the likes of Harry Kane, Chloe Kelly, Leah Williamson or Marcus Rashford at last year’s FIFA World Cup, the European Championships, or during this year’s football season, then local football club Wickwar Wanderers has just the thing any young Lion has been dreaming about.

Wickwar Wanderers are launching a new skills group for Reception and Year One children so they can take their first steps on emulating their football heroes.

The idea is to create a fun, safe and exciting pathway for boys and girls, of all levels, who want to take their first steps in football.

Led by former Wickwar junior Alex Lumsden, who is the founder and head coach at Proformance Coaching, the ambition is to offer local youngsters the chance to experience the beautiful game for the first time.

Alex graduated through the club to become a UEFA A Licenced coach and has worked with the Academies at Forest Green Rovers and Bristol Rovers.

“I grew up in Wickwar and started playing for the club at the age of five, so the area and its football is something I am passionate about supporting,” Alex said. “I was very fortunate to go and play at a higher level and also develop my coaching skills, but it wouldn’t have happened without those early years at Wickwar.

“This is a chance for me to give something back to the community, use the skills and experience I have gained to create something important, and I hope the boys and girls around Wickwar see this as a great opportunity to come and experience the game I love.”

The sessions will start on Saturday 3 June, from 9:00 – 9:50am at King George V Playing Fields in Wickwar on Saturday mornings.

Wickwar’s chairman, Pete Adams, added: “Sport and sports clubs are the lifeblood of local communities and we wanted to create a safe, welcoming and fun introduction to football at Wickwar.

“To have someone of Alex’s skills and experience willing to create this opportunity and give something back to his local club is a real honour and I hope plenty of local kids take the opportunity to get involved in a sport that makes friendships, creates team-work and fantastic memories.

“I’d like to welcome him back and look forward to seeing the sessions up and running – it’s very exciting.”

Parents can book a free taster session by heading to Proformance Coaching’s website or through Facebook.
